Chess Club Grand Finalists Revealed!
After seventeen weeks, 126 games and over 1,300 captured pieces, a huge congratulations go to formidable chess masters T. Prendergast and L. Carney who have made it to the prestigious grand final of this year’s Bosbury School Chess Championship!
The stage has been set!
Twenty-four participants at the start of the tournament have been whittled down to the final two, and, like the tense quarter-finals played out last week, the two semi-final games needed the full allotted half an hour to decide who would be taking their seat at the climax of the tournament.
None of the four semi-finalists were able to declare checkmate in the time allowed, meaning that each penultimate fixture had to be decided on pieces obtained as T. Prendergast squeaked through to the final via only a single piece as he drew 9-8 with valiant semi-finalist C. Walker.
Only two pieces also separated L. Carney and T. Bailey in their hard-fought semi-final encounter, with the former player eventually taking the 14-12 stalemate as he was even forced to multitask in eating his lunch during this thrilling and very drawn-out penultimate battle on the board!
The stage has therefore been set for these two hardened chess warriors to compete in the concluding game during the last week of term to decide who will take home the coveted golden chess championship trophy for the first time since E. Ruddick defeated J. Walker in a memorable final two years ago. Good luck to both of the finalists, and also to C. Walker and T. Bailey who will be duking it out for third place!
